Employment Opportunities

Development & Communications Contractor

About Rx Partnership

Rx Partnership is a statewide nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to essential medications for underserved populations across Virginia. Through an innovative public-private model, we have spent over 20 years building and expanding programs that improve health outcomes and remove barriers to care.

Reports to: Director of Development & Marketing

Status: Independent contractor (1099) — average 10–15 hours/week

Location: Hybrid — primarily remote, with regular in-person time in the Richmond, VA area (including for our fall fundraising event)

Compensation: Paid, $15-$20/hour to start (based on experience)

Primary Focus: Nonprofit fundraising communications, marketing, storytelling, donor and event support

Position Overview

Rx Partnership works to ensure that uninsured and underinsured Virginians have access to the medications they need to stay healthy — today, 1 in 4 Virginians can't afford the prescriptions their health depends on.

The Development & Communications Contractor will work directly with the Director of Development & Marketing to help tell Rx Partnership's story, support donor and sponsor relationships, and pitch in on our marketing channels and fundraising events. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants real nonprofit experience — the work you do will show up in our newsletter, on our social media, in donor communications, and at our events.

This is an excellent opportunity for a current student, a recent graduate, or someone who is looking to switch into nonprofit work from the for-profit world. This is a paid, independent-contractor (1099) arrangement rather than an employee position — you'll invoice Rx Partnership for hours worked rather than receive a W-2 or employee benefits.

Key Responsibilities

Storytelling & Content

•      Help collect, organize, and (with proper consent) write up patient and clinic-partner stories for our story bank, for use in newsletters, social media, and funder materials

•      Draft and help repurpose content for the monthly e-newsletter and blog

•      Write photo captions, social copy, and other short-form content

Social Media & Design

•      Support batch-creation and scheduling of social media content across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn

•      Help build and maintain branded templates in Canva (social graphics, one-pagers, event materials)

•      Help organize photos and video from clinic visits and events for future use

Donor & Sponsor Support

•      Help prepare donor and sponsor acknowledgment and thank-you communications

•      Support organization and follow-up tracking of donor and sponsor outreach lists

•      Assist with drafting tailored one-pagers or impact summaries for funders

Event Support

•      Help with logistics for Rx Partnership's fall fundraising breakfast and other events — invitation and RSVP tracking, day-of materials, and volunteer coordination

•      Provide in-person support at events when schedule allows — registration, greeting, or photography

•      Assist with post-event follow-up: thank-you notes, recap content, and social posts

Administrative & Research Support

•      Light data entry and organization in our donor database and story bank

•      Research potential funders, sponsors, or community partners

•      General support on other development and communications projects as they come up

What We're Looking For

•      Current graduate or undergraduate student, recent graduate in communications, marketing, nonprofit management, public health, or a related field — or equivalent experience and interest

•      Strong writing skills and attention to detail

•      Comfortable managing your own time and working independently in a small, mostly-remote team

•      Interest in nonprofit work, health equity, or medication access is a plus

•      Familiarity with Canva, social media scheduling tools, or a donor database (we use Bloomerang) is helpful but not required — we're happy to train

•      Reliable access to a laptop and internet for remote work

•     Able to work as an independent contractor (able to invoice for hours worked; not seeking W-2 employment)

Schedule & Logistics

•      10–15 hours/week, with a flexible daytime schedule that can work around class or other commitments

•      Hybrid: most work can be done remotely, with regular check-ins (in person when possible) at our Richmond office, plus in-person availability for at least one or two key events, including our fall event

•     Paid, independent-contractor (1099) engagement — $15-$20/hour to start, based on experience; you'll submit invoices or timesheets for hours worked

•     Flexible start date; an initial 3–6 month engagement is a good starting point, with the option to continue based on fit and mutual interest

What You'll Gain

•      Real, portfolio-ready writing, design, and campaign work

•      Hands-on exposure to donor cultivation, fundraising events, and nonprofit storytelling

•      A behind-the-scenes look at how a small, high-impact nonprofit development shop runs
