We could all use a little reminder to take care of ourselves during these difficult times!

Why Do I Need a “Self-Care” Wellness Box?

We at Rx Partnership (RxP) know this last year has been a challenging one. In addition to the common stressors of everyday life—work, bills, childcare, etc.—the COVID-19 Pandemic has brought a whole new level of fear, concern and fatigue into our lives. In fact, during the pandemic, about 4 in 10 U.S. adults have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, up from 1 in 10 adults reporting these symptoms from January to June 20191.

To help highlight the importance of self-care, RxP created carefully curated Treat Yourself with Rx Partnership self-care wellness boxes to remind us how important it is to take a minute to reset, rejuvenate, and reinvest in our own well-being.  Self-care means taking care of yourself so you can relieve the pressures of everyday life and get back to a healthy point where productivity is again maximized2 & 3.

Engaging in a self-care routine has been clinically proven to reduce or eliminate anxiety and depression, reduce stress, improve concentration, minimize frustration and anger, increase happiness, improve energy, and more2!

Benefits of the Items in Your Box:

Whether it’s for your daily medication(s) or just to keep a supply of pain relievers close, this convenient case has three separate compartments to keep your medications handy and organized.  We know when people have consistent access to their medications, they tend to be healthier. RxP is not only dedicated to providing medications to vulnerable Virginians who’d otherwise not be able to afford them, we are also a trusted partner that provides health literacy resources for both clinics and patients, offers tools for medication management and acts as a training, educational, and advocacy support for clinics.

Quality teas come packed with antioxidants and nutrients. Numerous studies have shown that the flavonoids in teas may boost your immune system, bring about mental alertness, lower cholesterol, fight off inflammation and even ward of cancer and heart disease4 & 5. While some brews provide more health advantages than others do, there is plenty of evidence that regularly drinking tea can have a lasting impact on your wellness4.

Big Heart Tea Co. uses 100% organic herbs in all herbal blends and only uses whole ingredients—no flavors, coloring or sweeteners added—and refuses to use ingredients that aren't traceable or coming from a place of health. Their tea sachets are made from 100% compostable, non-toxic PLA which means no harmful chemicals leech into your tea. So go ahead and sip safe6.

High-quality honey contains many important antioxidants, including organic acids and compounds like flavonoids7. Antioxidants have been linked to reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes and some types of cancer7. Eating honey may lead to modest reductions in blood pressure, improve cholesterol and lower triglycerides7. And it's delicious!

Virginia Honey Bees farm is located in Northern Virginia. Their honey products are all-natural, 100% pure, and fresh from the comb to your home8

RXBAR® Protein Bars are whole food protein bars with clean ingredients. “Not everyone has the time to make a balanced snack or breakfast. With clean ingredients that are gluten free, high-quality protein, and little to no added sugar, we try to make something for everyone to enjoy - no matter where they are on their wellness journey9.”

A healthy and balanced relationship with dark chocolate may have a positive impact on your overall health10. Dark chocolate is loaded with powerful nutrients and antioxidants called flavonols11, which fight inflammation and protect against cell damage caused by free radicals10. Research has shown that dark chocolate can: lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of clotting and increase blood circulation to the heart; balance the immune system; combat diabetes; reduce stress; and improve brain function, which includes a better reaction time, visual-spatial awareness and stronger memory10.

Candles can be powerful tools for our mental health.

The healing connection between scent and emotional well-being is well-documented. Scents send signals to our limbic system, which is the sector of the brain that controls memory and emotion12. According to several studies, aromas can elicit positive emotions, reduce stress, and improve mood13. Through our sense of smell, we have the power to shape our environment, and create a sense of well-being14.

The soft flicker and gentle glow of candlelight helps provide a warm and peaceful atmosphere to soothe the mind and induce calm. The next time you have a stressful day, light a candle, watch the flame and just breathe for a few minutes - even just 60 seconds can make a big difference14.

Using the science of positive psychology to improve happiness, journaling is just one aspect of a healthy lifestyle for better managing stress. Benefits of journaling include: reaching your goals, managing emotions, clearing your mind, improving your memory, reducing anxiety and depression, and boosting your overall health15!

Coloring isn’t just for kids! Coloring has multiple health benefits including reducing stress & anxiety, as well as improving motor skills, vision, sleep and focus. Coloring can relax the amygdala or fear center of the brain, which induces the same state as meditation leading to mindfulness and quietness. Coloring is the perfect way to relax and unwind after a stressful day16 & 17.

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.20  Mindfulness improves well-being and mental and physical health by: relieving stress, treating heart disease, lowering blood pressure, reducing chronic pain, and improving sleep.21  Susan Wilkes has over 25 years of experience specializing in custom-designed consulting that strengthens visionary leadership, inclusive culture, and the power of collaborative teams. She is a certified teacher of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindful Self Compassion.
